How High Alchemy Works

High Level Alchemy is a level 55 Magic spell on the standard spellbook. Each cast requires 1 nature rune and 5 fire runes — though you should always equip a fire staff or tome of fire to eliminate the fire rune cost entirely. The spell converts any tradeable item into gold coins equal to 60% of its store price, a fixed value known as the "high alch value."

You can cast approximately 1,200 alchs per hour at maximum speed. The profit formula for each cast is straightforward: Alch Value - Buy Price - Nature Rune Cost = Profit. Any item whose high alch value exceeds the sum of its current GE buy price and the cost of a nature rune is profitable to alch. The key to consistent alch profits is using live price data rather than outdated lists. Item prices fluctuate constantly on the Grand Exchange, and an item that was profitable yesterday might be a loss today. Best Item Categories for Alching

Rune equipment is the classic alching staple. Items like rune platebodies, rune platelegs, and rune kiteshields have high alch values and consistent supply from PvM drops. Their buy limits are generous enough to sustain extended alching sessions, making them a reliable default choice.

Dragon items such as dragon longswords and dragon daggers offer higher profit per cast but come with more price volatility. Jewelry and enchanted items are frequently overlooked — rings, necklaces, and amulets can be surprisingly profitable when demand dips. Crafted items like battlestaves and dragonhide bodies benefit from steady supply via skillers, keeping prices predictable.

Alching vs Flipping: When to Use Each Method

Alching is a passive money-making method — you can cast it while training agility on rooftop courses, grinding slayer tasks, or doing quests. This makes it ideal for players who want to earn GP without dedicating full attention to the Grand Exchange. Flipping, on the other hand, requires active management of buy and sell offers but can be done largely AFK between offer checks.

Alching has a hard GP/hour ceiling determined by nature rune prices and item buy limits. No matter how good the items are, you're capped at around 1,200 casts per hour. Flipping scales with your bank — more capital means more simultaneous offers and higher total profit. A player with 100M GP flipping across all 8 GE slots will vastly out-earn any alching session.

The best strategy is to combine both methods. Buy items to alch from the GE while your flip offers are filling in the background. • 1.Always check live prices before bulk buying. An item profitable 30 minutes ago may have shifted. This page updates every 10 minutes.
